The sculpture, named Riverie, was created and designed by Paul Johnson. Reverie is about diverse segments of a city coming together as a community. The forms allude to Industry displacing Nature creating the conditions for Culture.

To the right you can see Johns original concept drawing of what he invisaged the sculpture to look like.

Laser concept for the sculpture

The shapes and curves of the sculpture represent specific features of the surrounding landscapes. The poles represent tree branches, while the ring represents time with sections of it broken and fallen to the ground. When Paul contacted us he had a vision of people walking through his sculpture with grid lines all across their bodies. This was to be created by a laser grid effect.

After a few brain storming sessions, we came to the realisation so much more can be done with the laser in addition to the grid style effect. The idea was born to have the laser actually tell the story of the birth of the sculpture with animation. The story starts back in time with the free standing tree and branches, time passes with 4 seasons (represented by 4 rings) followed by a strong wind bringing in new sand. As the sand builds up higher around the branches they break off and fall into place. The 4th season ring falls amongst the branches as time passes to blow away the sand revealing the sculpture. Throughout the story we created segments of grid style effects made up of the animation components.

At night the laser generated web of green lines weaves people together. The program of animated drawings describe the context and content of the sculpture.
